7-step process to nail technical SEO for any website

During my 13-year-long SEO career and dozens of websites and projects I’ve worked on, I had one favourite type of projects:

📄 Creating technical SEO documentation.

I did it for new, complicated websites.

I did it for migrations.

And I did it for a big content management system empowering dozens of dealership websites.

What is technical SEO documentation?

It's basically the main source of knowledge about all technical SEO aspects of a website, including its structure, crawlability and indexability by page type, canonicalization, conventions and the level of flexibility for all important SEO tags such as title tags, H1s, etc.

All the processes for all teams should be based on the documentation so that the website stays optimized and consistent.

Creating technical SEO documentation is hard: you need to take so many things into account and also understand the business really well.

It gets much easier when you have a solid understanding of technical SEO.

Here's a 7-step framework that will help you nail down any technical SEO documentation (or technical SEO for any website, really):

And I would always use the same framework:

1️⃣ Identify what pages need to be crawled, indexed and ranked

2️⃣ Make sure these pages are optimized using templates

3️⃣ Identify the pages that should not be indexed/ranked

4️⃣ Identify the best methods to use in order to keep these pages out of Google (canonicals, noindex, URL types)

5️⃣ Build an internal linking strategy accordingly so that the right pages are linked with the right URLs

6️⃣ Identify the most suitable structured data types by page template

7️⃣ Provide recommendations to improve page speed

This scalable approach sets up a great SEO foundation you can confidently build on in the future.

The most valuable lesson I learnt is that I can be a genius, but if I can't communicate in ways where people can understand and digest, I'm no different than a sitting fool. Zafran Zaba, Lead SEO Strategist This is part of the Tech SEO Pro course testimonial I received the other day. And I felt inspired. It reminded me why I created the course and have been sharing so much information through my free newsletters and LinkedIn posts: 😎 Solid expertise + 🤝 proper communication = 🏆 win-win Zafran...

This is not your typical "AI tools and secrets for tech SEOs" post. Because the tools and secrets are secondary. The first thing is your expertise. I know, it can be an unpopular opinion. But hear me out. Every day, there's a new post on LinkedIn about "that great new AI tool for technical SEOs". It gets overwhelming as you already have a list of AI tools to try, and you never have time to get to it. So you add that another tool to your list, hoping one day you'll have time to explore it....

🚀 Psst... Here's the truth: It's not enough to send your recommendations to developers and call it a day. They won't implement any of your smart ideas (sad, right?) What you need to do instead is to start speaking the same language with developers (and it does not = becoming one 😉). This is the only way to get your SEO recommendations implemented. I created the BRIDGE framework to help you with that. And I teach it inside my short but impactful GSI course: Check out the Get SEO Implemented...
